RECOMMENDATIONS

 

The following recommendations are made:

Many engineering options were proposed which included removal of existing structures, widening of river channels and raising of defence walls etc. Some of these methods are not potentially viable due to the increased costs incurred and due to the historical and heritage values of certain engineering modifications suggested.

i.e. The replacement of the Old Bridge.

The options considered following consultation with the local authority were as follows:

  1. Removal of Dudley’s weir.
  2. Replacement of Gashouse Bridge.
  3. Opening of arches in Gashouse Bridge.
  4. Replacement of Old Bridge.
  5. Increasing capacity through Old Bridge.
  6. Removal/replacement of old weir and Cooney’s weir.
  7. Lowering of invert levels of Old Bridge.
  8. Provision of storage upstream of Clonmel
  9. By pass channel at Old Bridge.
  10. Widening of river below Gashouse Bridge.
  11. Deepening of river below Gashouse Bridge.

 

A Good Samaritan brings some food supplies to marooned residents of the Old Bridge.
