The Anatomy of a Greyhound

Head – A greyhound’s head is long and narrow and fairly wide between the ears. They have a long nose or muzzle which should be very powerful. Their teeth are very strong and even in the front.

Ears – Their ears are small and fine in texture, thrown back and folded, except when they are excited, as their ears become semi-pricked.

Eyes – Their eyes are usually bright, dark coloured and intelligent indicating spirit.

Neck – The neck is long, muscular, slightly arched and widening into the shoulder.

Shoulders – Their shoulders are muscular but not too heavy.

Forelegs – Greyhound’s forelegs are perfectly straight, set well into the shoulders and neither turned in or out.

Chest – The chest is deep and wide for speed and fairly well sprung ribs.

Back – Their backs are muscular and broad.

Loins and Hindquarter – These are also muscular, well arched, powerful wide and the hindquarter is close to the ground.

Feet – their feet are hard and close, well knuckled with good strong claws.

Tail – The tail is long, fine and tapering with a slight curve.

Coat – They have a short, smooth firm coat.

Colour – They can come in any colour – fawn, brindle (a mix of colours) black, white or black and white.

Weight – Their weight can vary from 55 to 65 pounds for bitches and 60 to 80 pounds for dogs.
